Vaclav Smil is not, by temperament, a man who enjoys guessing. A Czech-Canadian scientist who has spent his career counting things — energy flows, harvests, populations, the mass of steel and concrete civilization moves each year — he built a reputation on distrusting the confident futurologists who fill airport bookshops. So when he sat down to write about the next fifty years of the planet, in a 2008 book called Global Catastrophes and Trends, the surprising move was that he refused to forecast at all. No scenarios, no timelines, no bold predictions with a date attached.
What he offered instead was a way of looking. Smil's claim is that fundamental change tends to arrive through one of two doors. There is the fatal discontinuity — the sudden shock, the volcano, the pandemic, the war, the attack that reorders everything in a matter of days. And there is the trend, the slow grinding shift in how many of us there are, how warm the air is, where the money sits, which unfolds so gradually that we barely register it while living inside it. Both can be world-changing. Only one of them ever makes the news the day it happens.
The book reads like an inventory of the possible, assembled by someone allergic to hype. Smil weighs asteroids against influenza, oil supply against demographic aging, and keeps refusing to tell us which one will get us. That refusal is the point — and it is also what makes the book harder, and more useful, than the doom-or-boom titles it sits beside.

01Chapter 1 — Two ways the world actually changes
Smil opens by drawing a line that runs through the whole book, and it is worth sitting with before the examples arrive. Change, he argues, comes in two fundamentally different shapes. The first is discontinuity: an abrupt rupture, a break in the ordinary run of things that can happen in hours or weeks. The second is trend: a directional movement so slow that it takes decades to reveal itself, and often can only be seen clearly in hindsight. The two are not just different in speed. They are different in kind, and they ask entirely different things of us.
The discontinuity is dramatic and legible. A pandemic, a massive eruption, a war, a coordinated attack — these announce themselves. They have a before and an after, a body count, a date we remember. Because they are vivid, we overrate some of them and underrate others, and Smil spends a good deal of energy trying to separate the genuinely civilization-threatening events from the ones that merely frighten us. A shock can be terrible and local, or modest-looking and global. Vividness is a poor guide to consequence.
02Chapter 2 — The catastrophes that arrive without warning
When Smil turns to the discontinuities, his first task is to demote the ones we fear most theatrically. Asteroid impacts and supervolcanoes are real, and a large enough one would indeed be civilization-ending — but their probability on any human timescale is vanishingly small. He treats them with respect and then moves them to the back of the queue. The events worth genuine planning, he argues, are the ones that are both plausible within fifty years and capable of reordering the world.
At the top of that list he places viral pandemics. Writing in 2008, well before COVID-19, Smil was blunt: a novel influenza pandemic was not a question of if but of when, and the globalized, densely connected world had built near-perfect conditions for one to spread. He walked through the 1918 catastrophe and the mechanics of how a new strain crosses from animals to humans, insisting that this was among the most predictable of the unpredictable events — certain in the aggregate, unknowable in its timing. Read after 2020, the passages are uncomfortable.
03Chapter 3 — The trends that move too slowly to see
If the catastrophes are the parts of the book that startle, the trends are where Smil is most at home, because trends are made of the numbers he has spent a lifetime tracking. And the first of them is demographic. The great story of the coming half-century, he argues, is not explosion but transition: fertility falling across most of the world, populations aging rapidly, and entire wealthy societies facing shrinkage and a top-heavy age structure with too few workers holding up too many retirees. This is a slow shift with enormous downstream force.
The second cluster is energy and environment, and here Smil's expertise gives the book its ballast. Modern civilization runs on fossil energy at a scale most people never contemplate, and any transition away from it — however necessary — will be neither fast nor cheap, because the physical infrastructure is vast and the alternatives face real limits of density and scale. On climate, he accepts the warming as a genuine long-term trend while resisting both the deniers and the apocalyptics, insisting the honest position is uncertainty about magnitude and pace, not comfort.
04Chapter 4 — Why prediction is the wrong ambition
Step back from the catalogue of asteroids and birthrates and a stranger argument emerges — one that is really about intellectual honesty rather than about the future at all. Smil's deepest target is the entire genre of confident forecasting. He has spent years mocking the futurists who extrapolate a curve and call it destiny, and this book is his constructive alternative: a way of thinking about what is coming that never pretends to know what is coming.
His method is to replace prediction with two humbler tools. The first is probability: not what will happen, but what is likely, and how likely, and at what scale. A pandemic within fifty years is near-certain; a supervolcano is not; both deserve their honest weighting rather than the weighting our fears assign them. The second is preparation. Since we cannot know the timing, the rational response is not to guess but to build resilience — systems and reserves that hold up regardless of which particular shock lands.
05Conclusion
The book closes where it began: with a scientist declining to play prophet. Smil surveys the volcanoes and viruses, the aging populations and the shifting balance of economic power, and refuses to arrange them into a story with an ending. He has no date for the next pandemic, no verdict on how hot it gets, no timetable for the fall of one power and the rise of another. He has, instead, a way of paying attention — to the shocks that could arrive tomorrow and the trends that have been arriving for decades without our noticing.
