About the author

Milton Friedman (1912–2006) stands as one of the most consequential economists of the twentieth century. Born in Brooklyn, he shared intellectual leadership of the University of Chicago's neoclassical school with George Stigler, championing monetarism against both Keynesian and Marxist orthodoxies. A 1976 Nobel laureate recognized for his work on consumption analysis and monetary theory, he introduced the permanent income hypothesis, predicted stagflation, and argued that the Phillips curve was vertical in the long run.

His mentorship shaped a generation of economists, including Nobel laureates Gary Becker, Robert Fogel, and Robert Lucas Jr.
