Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1944, Angela Davis is one of the most prominent figures in American radical thought — a Marxist feminist philosopher, activist, and author whose life has bridged the academy and the front lines of political struggle. Educated at Brandeis University, the University of Frankfurt, UC San Diego, and Humboldt University in Berlin, she taught philosophy at UCLA until her firing over Communist Party membership sparked a landmark legal battle. Acquitted in 1972 of capital charges linked to a Marin County courtroom takeover, she is now Distinguished Professor Emerita of Feminist Studies at UC Santa Cruz.
